CASE REPORT Late spontaneous recanalization of internal carotid artery: case report
نویسندگان
چکیده
Late spontaneous recanalization of internal carotid artery is an unusual event that has received little attention. The authors report a case of a 73-year-old male patient, hypertensive, with previous history of cerebral vascular accident 3 years ago, with sensorimotor sequela in the right upper limb. Duplex scanning and arteriography showed total occlusion of the internal carotid artery. The patient progressed after 2 years with new episodes of recurrent transient ischemic attacks. When submitted to new imaging examinations to assess extraand intracranial circulation, vessel recanalization was demonstrated, with severe stenosis. Left carotid endarterectomy was uneventfully performed. The patient progressed without new episodes after a 1-month follow-up. Considering the case rarity and the lack of literature on late carotid artery recanalization that can be surgically repaired, we decided to present this case focusing on the importance of following carotid artery occlusions.

Spontaneous recanalization after complete occlusion of the common carotid artery with subsequent embolic ischemic stroke.
INTRODUCTION Acute carotid artery occlusion carries a high morbidity and mortality. Acute angioplasty and stenting is a feasible option with little known about the long term outcome. Limiting factor for this approach is hyperperfusion syndrome or hemorrhagic infarction. Spontaneous early or late recanalization for extracranial vessel is in the range of 5% -30%, with no well defined clinical out...
متن کاملCarotid Artery Stenting in a Patient with Spontaneous Recanalization of a Proximal Internal Carotid Artery Occlusion: a Case Report
We report here on a rare case of carotid artery angioplasty and stenting in a patient with spontaneous recanalization after complete occlusion of the proximal internal carotid artery (ICA). The patient initially showed severe stenosis at the left proximal ICA on MR angiography (MRA). Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) performed three days after MRA showed complete occlusion of the proximal I...
متن کاملSpontaneous recanalization of an occluded internal carotid artery.
Recanalization after extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion is a rare phenomenon and the natural history of the disease is largely unknown. There have been few cases reported in the published data, including early recanalization after a cerebrovascular accident (CVA). We report a case of a 74-year-old man who presented with a CVA and a history of multiple CVAs in the past, the las...
متن کاملSpontaneous recanalization of the occluded internal carotid artery. A report of two cases.
Spontaneous recanalization of the occluded internal carotid artery (ICA) is more frequent than is generally believed. The timing of spontaneous recanalization remains unclear but it may occur as either an early or a late event. The aim of this case report is to emphasize the importance of spontaneous recanalization and its consequences. From September 2008 to November 2010 we prospectively foll...
متن کاملSpontaneous recanalization of chronic occlusion of the internal carotid artery.
Described in the article is a rare case concerning spontaneous recanalization of the extracranial portion of the internal carotid artery (ICA) eleven months after occlusion. Only few publications have been dedicated to recanalization of ICA chronic occlusion. Spontaneous recanalization of the ICA is more common than it is generally understood. The authors have analysed all available articles ab...
